Wearing the wrong shoes doesn’t just feel uncomfortable. Over time, it can lead to foot pain, sore knees, and even back issues. The good news is that choosing better shoes doesn’t have to be complicated — a few simple checks can make a big difference.
First, it helps to understand your foot type.
Flat feet or low arches: Shoes that feel stable and supportive are usually best. Look for a firm arch and a structured heel, as very soft or flimsy shoes can allow your feet to roll in too much.
Neutral arches: You’ve got plenty of options. Most shoes will work for you, as long as they feel comfortable and supportive. Try to avoid shoes that feel overly soft or lack structure.
High arches: Cushioning really matters. These feet tend to take more impact, so shoes that absorb shock well can help reduce pressure through the heel and the ball of the foot.
A quick rule of thumb: your shoes should bend at the toes, not in the middle, and they should feel comfortable straight away. If a pair needs weeks of “breaking in,” it’s probably not the right fit.
Getting the right shoe size is just as important. Many people don’t realize their foot size can change over time, so it’s worth getting measured every so often.
Try shoes on later in the day when your feet are a little fuller, and make sure there’s about a thumb’s width of space at the front. Your heel should feel secure without rubbing or slipping, and always fit shoes to your bigger foot — most of us have one slightly larger than the other. Remember, sizing can vary between brands, so don’t get too focused on the number.
Even the best shoes don’t last forever. Over time, the support inside breaks down — often before the outside looks worn. As a general guide, everyday shoes should be replaced every 9–12 months. Running or walking shoes usually last around 500–700 kilometres, while work shoes for people on their feet all day often need replacing every 6–9 months. If you’re starting to notice new aches or your shoes feel less cushioned, it’s probably time for a new pair.
The right shoes, in the right size, can make a huge difference to how your feet and your whole body feel each day.
